What it takes to Become a SAG-AFTRA Member

Being an entertainer is a calling fueled by an undeniable passion for captivating others through various forms of art.

It feels right to transport people to different worlds, evoke emotions, and create unforgettable experiences. Whether I am working as an actor, singing, or dancing the innate desire to connect with my audience, to make you laugh, cry, or think. I thrive on the energy that flows between us. In the industry, many individuals take advantage of our love for the arts. The Screen Actor's Guild protects us from events that are unreasonable and often degrading to a human being.

Through the Journey of getting my SAF-AFTRA card and finally, being recognized by my peers as a professional, I endured many challenges but also learned a lot. I worked in Productions with Drew Barrymore, Jim Carrey, Harrison Ford, Matthew McConaughey, and Sandra Bullock. And many others. Check out my IMDb Profile. No.1, you need a resume with strong credits to get jobs in Hollywood. To get prominent roles, you need an agent or manager that has a connection with the top productions and send you out on casting calls. But You can't get an agent without experience, and you can't get experience without an agent. So where do we begin?!

For many of us, it is a background actor. When we work as such, we are handed vouchers. You require three Pink vouchers where you had a speaking role or are featured. It doesn't come easy. It can take weeks, months, or in my case, two and a half years.

Here is a better explanation: SAG-AFTRA membership is available to those who work in a position covered by a SAG-AFTRA (or AFTRA or SAG) collective bargaining agreement, provided that any person qualifying through work as a background actor must have completed three (3) days of work as a background actor under a SAG-AFTRA (or AFTRA or SAG.

To join The SAG-AFTRA initiation fee is $3,000. Once you're in, you pay an annual base fee of $231.96 and an additional 1.575% of SAG-AFTRA-protected earnings up to $1,000,000.

Not all Hollywood productions are Union, so you spend time and money working on booking a Union project. There are tons of non-union actors who do not have a SAG card! However, if you want to be able to perform in bigger productions, like major motion pictures and network television, you'll need a SAG card.) Once you are a member, you must abide by the rules of membership, starting with Global Rule One and the No Contract/No Work Rule. And, whether you are a SAG-AFTRA member or not, never accept work during a union strike. Yes, what the WGA and what we, the SAG-AFTRA performers are experiencing right now during our fight with the AMPTP can give you an idea of the painful situation we're in, with Artificial Intelligence (AI)  AI technology has made significant advancements in recent years, enabling the creation of digital characters, voice synthesis, and even fully generated performances.
